THERE IS NO ONE FORMULA FOR EVERYONE

We are all completely unique. There is no one else exactly like us, there never has been and there never will be. We may be similar to some people, we are similar even to some animals in some ways. But our bodies, our thoughts & ideas, our dreams, our needs—they are uniquely ours. So, why do we think we should all be able to do the same things and have the same results? Eat the same way and have the same results? Live our lives like someone else and have the same results. We can’t really. We’re led to believe that we can, even that we should be able to. We are marketed to and sold things that may work really well for a number of people, but if they don’t work for us, we feel bad, feel like they should work for us. But that isn’t right. There are some things that are true for most of us, like the general way our bodies work, how our hearts pump, how our digestion works. But some of us might be able to eat more meat than others. Some may not be able to eat meat at all. Some of us might be able to digest dairy and some of us may not. Some of us may be able to eat a lot of salad and raw food and some of us may not. And that makes sense, when you think about it, doesn’t it? If we are all unique, it makes sense that the same food, same lifestyle, won’t work for all of us.

We understand that not everyone is meant to be a teacher, a doctor, or a construction worker. If we apply that to health and nutrition we should be able to understand that we each have different needs and finding balance for ourselves is a unique endeavor for each person.

Why is it so hard to do this? We live in a world that attempts to homogenize everything in order to sell it to the masses. And in doing that, we are told that this one thing or that one thing is THE thing for us. No wonder we feel badly when that is NOT the thing for us! And confused about why it doesn’t work. They said it would work, there’s research to support it. Does that mean there’s something wrong with ME? No, it doesn’t. NOT AT ALL. And, I’m here to tell you, what does work for you is out there and you can find it.

So, I encourage you not to give up. If you’re someone who is frustrated with all the conflicting and confusing information out there, or someone who has tried certain things and not gotten the desired results…don’t give up…the answer does exist. It may take talking to different people. It may mean just getting extra support to help you figure out what makes sense for YOU. Maybe you know what you need to do, but just have trouble doing it. Friends, holistic healers, health coaches and many others can be a valuable resources in figuring out how to achieve your goals and making your life exactly how you want it in order to thrive, not just survive. Remember, we are all unique, there’s no one formula for everyone.

START FROM A PLACE OF LOVE

rose & flower

When we want to make changes in and improve upon our lives, whether it be physical, mental, or emotional, one of the most important and often most difficult things to remember is to start from a place of love and kindness towards ourselves. Many of us have been trained to be hard on ourselves in order to ‘push through’ and ‘make things happen’. Although this may work in the short term, it sets up a dynamic with ourselves that says we’re not ok where we are right now, that this isn’t a good starting point, that we “should be” somewhere else or have things figured out better already. There are very good, very real reasons for the struggles each of us encounter in our lives. And being hard on ourselves doesn’t allow us to acknowledge the fact that given all the circumstances, we have really done the best we could do to get where we are now. And we have worked hard on our own behalf. That’s not to let us off the hook, but rather a way to frame where we can start from. Instead of saying, “I’m not happy with how things are and I just need to kick myself to get there”, we can instead say something like, “I have done the best that I could to get where I am now and I”m pleased with myself for getting this far, and I’d like to change some things and achieve the goals I have for myself.” And, for most of us, the next step is…”and I could use a little help getting there.” We’re also conditioned to try and figure things out all by ourselves, when in fact, even a little help can go a very long way, and we actually can function better as humans when we know there is another person who cares that we achieve our goals for ourselves and will champion our efforts.

So, try thinking of one thing you are pleased with about yourself, something you are pleased you did to get where you are today. If you think of more than one, great! And use that place of feeling pleased with yourself as a starting point towards achieving your goals. Then ask yourself, “What do I want to do from here? What’s my next step?” And maybe, “Who could support me in my endeavors?” Or, “Who already gives me love and support for my dreams and desires?”

Feel free to share things you’ve done and are pleased with, I’d love to hear them. Have a great day!
